Setting up custom wallpaper and the custom ringtone is one of the favorite parts of most of the cell phone users. On Android devices it is a quite straightforward process, you just select your favorite song and set it as a ringtone. But you just can’t set a custom ringtone on iPhone for free directly. Either you must purchase them from iTunes or must do file conversions to add a ringtone to ringtone library. But hey, don’t worry there is a small workaround that you can use to set up any song as your iPhone ringtone without having to deal with file conversions. So, let’s discuss this in detail.
The app that we are going to use is called GarageBand. This app is available on AppStore for free and was made for music creation and for a podcast. But we can also use this app for ringtone creation. iPhone ringtones have special file format MPEG-4 stored using .m4r extension. This app saves file with .m4r extension and we can use that file as a ringtone.
Step by Step Guide to Set a Custom Ringtone on iPhone for Free:
Step 1: Install the GarageBand
First, go to AppStore and install the GarageBand app. This is the app that we are going to use to create a ringtone from a song of our choice and it is free of cost.
Step 2: Load the Songs
You can choose songs from your device or you can use iCloud and Google Drive. To use iCloud or Google Drive, you will need to upload songs and then you can use them to create your ringtone.
Step 2: Start GarageBand App
Open the GarageBand app and swipe right and locate Audio Recorder. Click on the big mic icon to go to next screen.
Step 3: Disable External Sound
In this step disable the triangular icon present at the upper bar, just beside the play-stop button. We are disabling this icon because we don’t want any external sound in the ringtone.
Now, click on the upper left icon as shown in the image below to open timeline to edit our song.
Step 4: Import songs to GarageBand
Now, its time to import our songs to GarageBand timeline. As I said earlier, you can use songs from your phone or from a drive (iCloud or Google). To import tracks, click on the loop-shaped icon at upper right corner as shown in the image below.
Now, select Audio Files and click on browse items from the file app. Here browse your file and locate it, tap and hold it and drag it track view. Now, select that song to edit in the timeline.
Step 5: Edit Song
Here, you can edit your track and trim the selective part of the song to use as a ringtone. Once you are done with editing, you can play it back.
Step 6: Save and Setup Ringtone
Once you are happy with the edited song, its time save it and use it as a ringtone. To save the edited track click on options icon (see the below image) and select my songs, this will save your file. Don’t worry if shows “waiting for upload”.
To set this saved track as your iPhone ringtone, tap and hold the saved file and select share. On the next screen click on “Ringtone”. Give it a name and click on export. Once this is done, on the next screen click on “use sound as” and then set it to ringtone. Alternatively, you can click on ok and then follow the traditional method of changing a ringtone.
That’s it, you are done. No iTunes sync, no file extension hassle. Straight and simple way to set a custom ringtone on iPhone for free. I hope this helps you to create your favorite ringtones and amaze your friend.
